I began house sitting in my 20's at the request of family and friends who traveled for days or weeks at a time.
For them, having a house sitter was a matter of security and assurance. They liked the idea of leaving their home in the hands of someone they trusted - and knowing that in their absence - the home would appear to be occupied to neighbors and passersby. For me, house sitting was a welcome respite from apartment life and the nuances of roommates. Through these experiences, I learned a lot about responsibility and respect for a home.
Over the years, family responsibilities put my house sitting duties on hold, however, I periodically visited the homes of relatives or friends when they traveled. I’m happy to say that for the couple who first asked me to watch their home years ago, I’m again responsible for that same Kansas City home while they spend the winter months away.
